COMTO and FTA Launch Summer Intern Program Across the Nation
Together with the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), COMTO’s Careers In Transportation for Youth (CITY) Internship Program welcomes the class of 2014. These 17 college students will have an incredible opportunity to experience, first hand, the behind-the-scenes operations of the transportation industry – what it takes to make the country move. COMTO’s CITY Program, sponsored by the FTA, is designed to promote public transportation as viable career options for the next generation of leaders. For ten weeks this summer, from June 2 to August 8, the interns will get hands on experience and personal mentoring from industry professionals. As a bonus, they will attend COMTO’s 43rd National Meeting and Training Conference, in Atlanta, Georgia. "COMTO is pleased to partner with the FTA and our other Stakeholders in preparing the next generation of leaders for our industry,” said Julie Cunningham, COMTO’s President and CEO, noting that this partnership advances a COMTO strategic goal to develop new transportation leaders. The transportation industry is nearing a workforce crisis. A large number of transportation professionals are retiring, leaving a void of experienced leaders for the 21st century workforce. The CITY Internship Program addresses this issue and infuses new talent for the workforce pipeline. The program’s ultimate goal is to ensure that the nation is equipped with a diverse workforce to face the tough challenges of the next century. This year’s class will intern in ten locations: Atlanta, Denver, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Antonio, San Francisco, Tampa and Washington, DC. The interns will work with a variety of industry stakeholders (public and private transportation agencies and companies) on an assortment of projects. The class represents 13 different colleges and universities and an array of majors, including accounting, business, communications, engineering, economics, geography, law, marketing, international business, Japanese studies, psychology, sociology and supply chain management. "The industry definitely needs all of these skill sets and more,” stated Shirley DeLibero, COMTO Board Member and Former Board Chair.
For the 2012 CITY Internship Program, COMTO received 78 applications for 15 total positions. The applications came from a pool of highly diverse and talented students from across the country, representing 34 colleges and universities and 41 different majors. Impressed with the caliber of students interviewed, both COMTO National and the COMTO Colorado chapter each decided to fund an additional position, bringing the total number to 17 internships.
